February Virtual Lunch & Learn: Diversity, equity and inclusion in our workplace and community panel

What are the diversity, equity and inclusion issues happening around us, in our workplace and our local community? What can we do about them? How can we be part of the solution? Join our panel of experts Dr. Reginald Stewart, nicci port, and Dr. Javier Vela to hear about their experience. They will share with us ideas and suggestions on how to create an inclusive, welcoming working environment and community in which everyone is able to thrive. There will also be time for Q&A.

 

Dr. Reginald Stewart is Iowa State University’s inaugural Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion. Over the last three decades, he has provided support and leadership for a broad spectrum of inclusion initiatives encompassing accessibility services, income-eligible academic support programs, equal opportunity and Title IX compliance efforts, intercultural affairs, women’s and gender equity programs, LGBTQIA youth empowerment, faculty/staff-focused resource groups and town & gown diversity partnerships. Dr. Stewart has received recognition from the U.S. Department of Education, former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, the College Board, Excelencia in Education, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Nevada System of Higher Education and the Ames Chamber of Commerce. In 2019, Dr. Stewart was recognized with the Ames Humanitarian Award. The married father of two, he is a fan of all forms of acoustic instrumental music, and he enjoys supporting his children as they develop their musicianship on both strings and woodwinds.

 

 

 

nicci port (she|her|hers) serves Iowa State University as Project Director for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion and Gender & Sexual Diversity Initiatives.  She is the point person for awards, internal grants, VPDEI-supported organizations and Inclusion@IowaState. She is also the division’s contact for gender and sexual diversity work and topics that are important to the LGBTQ+ community. nicci is known as a creative and connective problem-solver who brings people together to help them live their commitment to DEI. She is a native of Iowa and is a fan of movies, live music, her scooter and Iowa State athletics.

 

 

 

 

 

Dr. Javier Vela is a University Professor and the John D. Corbett Professor of Chemistry at Iowa State University. Growing up in Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico, Dr. Vela became interested in science during high school. After earning his B.S. (Lic.) with Honors from the National Autonomous University of Mexico in 2001, he obtained M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in chemistry at the University of Rochester in 2003 and 2005, respectively. A faculty member at Iowa State University since 2009, Dr. Vela, throughout and in addition to his scholarly work, is interested in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in Central Iowa and beyond. Since 2015, he has served as Equity Advisor and Chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee at the Iowa State’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
